February
This the last month to prune apple and pear trees also for applying winter washes to dormant fruit trees.
Cut back ornamental grasses and perennials that have been used for winter interest.
If you didn’t plant any bulbs in the autumn you can buy many varieties in pots already growing, ready to be planted or ‘in the green’ as it is known.
After buying your seed potatoes stand them in seed trays or egg trays with the end with the most shoots facing upwards, in a frost free, cool, light position.
Clear dead leaves from the base of alpines and put a dressing of grit around them to help prevent rotting at the base.
Winter flowering heathers will need the flowers trimming off as they fade to prevent them becoming leggy and bare.
Continue to check that planted containers and pots in sheltered areas aren’t getting dry, keep them moist, and don’t be tempted to put them in saucers with water in them as this could lead to water logging and loss of your plants.
Tree and shrub planting can still be done but not in frosty or waterlogged conditions.
SAVE WATER TIP: We all run the hot tap to fill the bowl for washing up, if you have a container ready to collect the cold water that comes out first (instead of letting it run down the drain) this can be used to water your baskets or containers.
ALSO, why not invest in a water butt to collect the rain water, this can be used for the garden, baskets and containers.
